Nov 11 with Sergeant James Thomson

Due to the amazing response to the Global and CBC coverage many families of Canadian Veterans reached out to me.

One of them was the family of Sergeant James Thomson, who served during WWII in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

On Remembrance Day, while most vets were staying away from public gathers due to the COVID Pandemic, I went to visit Sergeant James Thomson at his home in North Vancouver.

We had to be creative in how we photographed his portrait as to make sure it followed COVID guidelines and didn’t put Thomson in harm’s way due to the rainy cold day we were having. The strategy was that I setup my lights and everything on his patio and photographed him through a door way while he sat in a warm living room with a good about of distance.

He was amazing to chat with even if it was very brief. He gave me the secret to long life, - as per Thomson, its laugh a lot, don’t drink and smoke and don’t stress as things find a way of working out.

Once I posted the portrait on my Instagram, I got a dm shortly thereafter from his granddaughter who found it super cool that her grandfather was on Instagram. Super touched that the Thomson family wanted to share Sergeant James Thomson with me and with the world.
